Physical structures build society around us and comprise the made world we all live in. The built environment connects us, as occupying a space together implies a shared experience that creates community. In this way, we look to architecture as both a means of designing space as well as a means of designing community interaction. As there are countless spatial structures designed to serve specific physical purposes (in this case, a space for cancer treatment), visual structures, in the form of paintings and images, may serve non-spatial, emotional purposes. The non-physical goal of the exhibition, Empathy is Constructed, is self explanatory, and the artists represented each construct their artwork, their visual empathy, through the meticulous planning, design, and execution of their images. By offering such structures and visual forms to the community of patients, staff, and caregivers, the artists and their artwork thus contribute to positive interactions desired by the community of patients, families, staff and physicians.
